Certificate program in MINISTRY FOR THE AGING: Course 5 – part 1 – Institutional Settings: Families and Caregivers of Seniors
In this course opportunities to serve the aging already abound, including the frailest elderly living in institutions, either Long Term Care or Retirement Homes, will be discussed. Most likely these opportunities will only increase in the coming years. Presently, more than 50% of the residents of LTC homes are 85+ with more than ⅓ of all Canadians 85+ living in such homes. Further, those 85+ are the fastest growing segment of the senior population with the most rapid increases in the number and proportion of persons 85+ to occur between 2030 and 2050, when the baby boomer cohort reaches 85+. Those 85+ will almost equal those under 20 sometime in the 2030s. This course provides an overview of these institutions, the profile of the residents, and considers how we might respond.
