CARING FOR OUR AGING NEIGHBOURS

PLEASE JOIN US FOR A ONE-DAY CONFERENCE

Many people recognize the stages of youth and adolescence in younger people. These are the years when people are strong and are developing their skills. Often without much effort, people have a lot of friends and energy and enjoy these vibrant years. However, in the later stages of life, many people become lonely. They lose contact with their former co-workers, their friends and their neighbours. Sometimes they even lose contact with their families. Many feel like they have no hope in life and in death anymore. They need our help to regain this hope and reflect on the meaning and purpose in their lives. Often a visit during which you lend a listening ear and some company, makes a huge difference for lonely people.

Churches can play a meaningful role in organizing visits and activities for the aging. In Ottawa the organization Embrace, in partnership with Connecting Streams was formed to find a church for each home for the aging to provide Spiritual Care for the vulnerable elderly.

ARE YOU WILLING TO HELP?

On Saturday November 4, 2023, the Word and Spirit Institute together with the Home Missions Committee of Redemption Church Flamborough has organized a mini-conference called:

“Caring for our Aging Neighbours”

Please join us for this conference

Doors open: 9:30 am

Conference start: 10:00 am with worship and prayer

Conference end: 2:30 pm

Lunch and refreshments will be provided

PROGRAM

After a Christian opening to the day, the need of visiting in senior residences will be discussed as an estimated 75% of the elderly in homes receive less than 1 visitor per month. Ideas will be given how churches can help those individuals who are either no longer able to get to church or never attended church.

After a break with refreshments, the morning will continue by looking at what could happen if all Churches of Christ work together to meet the needs of the elderly with special emphasis on reaching the growing group of those with dementia? Moreover, different ways of how to use Christian music in homes and how to incorporate it in your visits will be discussed. In addition, the speakers will show examples of the use of traditional as well as casual worship services.

During lunch, there will be ample opportunity to discuss different ideas with other participants after which the conference will continue by looking at ways to conduct one-to-one visits. This will be followed by an overview of different ways you and your church can help by adopting a residence and volunteer in caring for our aging neighbour.
